A small amount on springs and other moving parts may lessen ping and vibration, while thicker grease on stabilizers can help reduce plastic-on-plastic clack and lateral movement. Switch-specific synthetic greases and other products marketed as mechanical keyboard lubricant are commonly used on switch internals. Thinner lubricants are generally suited to applications where you want to maintain a light, fast-moving feel, while a thicker grease can provide more damping. With tactile switches, use a product and amount that smooths the movement without unnecessarily softening the bump.

Lubricant for stabilizers

Stabilizers usually benefit from a thicker silicone-based grease or another keyboard stabilizer lubricant. The denser consistency helps dampen movement where the wire and plastic parts contact each other. Many keyboard lubing kits include separate products for switches and stabilizers, along with brushes or syringes for controlled application.

How to lube mechanical keyboard switches

  1. Prepare the board. Remove the keycaps and switches. On a hot-swappable keyboard, switches can be removed from their sockets; other boards may require desoldering.
  2. Open the switches. Separate the top housing, stem, and spring carefully. Keep the parts organised so they can be reassembled correctly.
  3. Apply a thin coat. Use a small brush or needle applicator to place lubricant on the stem rails and sliding surfaces. The coating should be light and even rather than visibly heavy.
  4. Treat the spring sparingly. A small amount of spring lubricant can help reduce noise, but excess product may make the switch feel overly damped.
  5. Reassemble and test. Put the switch back together, install it in the keyboard, and check its movement before continuing with the full board.

Before working through every switch, practise on a few spare units. This makes it easier to judge how much lubricant produces the feel you want. If time is limited, you can treat frequently used keys first, although lubricating the complete set generally gives a more uniform result.

How to lube keyboard stabilizers

Stabilizers are often responsible for the rattle heard on wide keys. Apply a thicker keyboard lubricant to the stabilizer housing rails and to the wire at the points where it contacts the plastic. Work carefully so the lubricant reaches the contact surfaces without spreading unnecessarily onto surrounding components.

Some builders also adjust their stabilizers before applying grease, using methods such as clipping or banding. These modifications are separate from lubrication, but they can be combined with it when tuning larger keys.

  • Use lubricant designed for mechanical keyboard components rather than applying an untested household product.
  • Start with less product; adding a small amount is easier than removing excess.
  • Keep switch and stabilizer lubricants separate when the kit provides different formulas for each job.
  • Test the feel and sound periodically instead of waiting until the entire keyboard is assembled.
  • Store lubricant in a cool, dry place and keep a small amount available for future switch replacements or adjustments.

Careful lubrication can significantly improve a custom board, refresh an older mechanical keyboard, or reduce distracting noise in a shared workspace.
